Project 1: Aging in Place Apartment
Design statement:
Mr. and Mrs. Hawkins enjoy the mid-century modern design style which I incorporated throughout the apartment by using similar colors and minimalist furniture used back in the 1940s to 1960s. In addition to using a cactus shape diner sign from the time period as inspiration and as my concept for the project. Custom bookshelves used watercolor wallpaper and plants all pay tribute to the inspiration point. The color scheme was inspired by the historical period and the diner sign, by having dusty blues, pale greens and grays throughout the space. I also made the apartment suitable for aging in place by including grab bars, lighting connected to the alarm system, flooring and carpet to avoid slipping but still easy enough to travel throughout the space, and there is plenty of space for a wheelchair.
Project 2: Biophilia Barn Renovation
Design statement:
Chad enjoys the process and symbolism behind wine making which I incorporated throughout the home and outdoor spaces by using recycled wine barrels throughout the space. In addition, personal touches like a dreamcatcher, gay flag, pictures of the family and others fill the space to create a home feel as soon as they move in. Metal and wood elements throughout the space as well as custom furniture and other finishes all pay tribute to the inspiration point. The color scheme was inspired by the gay flag with a rustic twist, by having dusty rainbow colors with gray and brown accents throughout the space. The kid’s spaces are more bright and vibrant colors to play well with her young inspirational mind. As per the client's request, I made the home sustainable by including natural and/or repurposed materials, energy efficient lighting and appliances, a rain barrel collection system and solar roofing tiles. Many of these sustainable elements make the home very fire safe in the case of emergency. Universal design was also applied to the space by having textured flooring to avoid slipping, tub shower to take showers and baths, handy hardware for everyone to be able to get cabinet and drawers open easy and other elements outlined in the pages to come.
